Jordan's king pledges support to Palestinians in talks with Israel

Amman - Jordan's King Abdullah IIon Sunday vowed continued support to the Palestinians in their ongoing peace talks with Israel until the establishment of an 'independent state'.

'We will not hesitate in performing any role or effort and exploiting our ties with influential powers and international forums to enable our Palestinian brethren to regain their right and set up their independent state,' the monarch said in a televised address marking the country's Independence Day.

'We will continue to commit ourselves to the choice of just peace based on international legitimacy resolutions and within the Arab consensus,' he added.

Abdullah also pledged to preserve 'balanced ties' with neighbouring and friendly countries and to go forward with political reforms aimed at 'boosting basic freedoms of citizens and civil society institutions.'
